Presentation preview
I'm put together a pretty fun presentation for Hand Tool Haven, so I figured I'd give ya'll a sneak peak.
You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. This weekend is Hand Tool Haven and I’ve been working my butt off to get prepared.
Most of that work has been focused on getting together the grand door prize — a hi-vise and moxon vise combo with matching marquetry. You can read about that here.
Another thing I’ve been preparing for is my presentation. I wrote a bit about that the other day and how I was looking to change things up. After thinking about it a bit, I landed on an idea that I think is going to be pretty dang fun.
I plan on starting the presentation by going over the various ways that I’ve applied marquetry to larger projects over the years. I’ve got a decent number of examples that I hope will get the juices flowing for those watching. After that, I’ll launch into a quick demonstration.
A little over a year ago, my sister asked if I would make her a box to give as a gift. The only stipulation she had was that it had to have a hummingbird on it. I asked her if it was okay if I went a bit nuts and ended up doing just that.

As you can see, this thing has embellishment all over the place. And the vast majority of it is marquetry — very little inlay was done on this piece. My favorite part of it is undoubtedly the little bee that’s perched on one of the ends of a dovetail.
Now, I won’t be able to do something that detailed in an hour long presentation, but I still want to show everyone the general steps to getting it done. I also want to keep things light and fun, so I figured why not do a little stick figure climbing up some protruding dovetails?
I’ll go over how to plan and execute this from start to finish. Along the way, I’ll highlight some special considerations that will ensure the project turns out as good as possible. I really think it’ll be an interesting demo and even if you’re not interested in marquetry, you’ll likely learn something that you can apply to your own work.
If you can’t make it in person to the event, I’ll be recording and posting my presentation along with an accompanying article (with diagrams!) for paid subscribers in the coming weeks.
Looking forward to seeing everyone this weekend!
